Instructor: Suzanne Hetts, Ph.D., CAAB & Daniel Q. Estep, Ph.D., CAAB
- Do you know what a behavioral history is?
- Do you know the basic parts of a good behavioral history?
- Do you know what skills are necessary to take a good
behavioral history?
- Do you know how to direct the behavioral interview
in the direction it needs to go?
Taking a behavioral history is a critical and necessary
part of working with any client who has a pet with a behavior
problem. Until you have a complete behavioral history,
you can't identify what's causing the problem and you won't
have a good idea about how to resolve the problem.
History taking is a specialized type of interview. You
have to know what questions to ask and how to ask them.
We'll give you many examples of good questions and not
so good questions that influence the quality and accuracy
of information you obtain. There are about as many history
forms as there are history takers but we'll give you examples
of several broad types for you to choose from. We'll give
you ideas about how you to sort out the wheat from the
chaff, or be able to recognize what's important and what's
irrelevant. You'll learn how you can establish a rapport
with your clients and make it clear you are both on the
same side. You'll also learn skills to control the conversation
and keep clients on track without offending them or impeding
the flow of information.
In addition to lecture, participants will have the opportunity
to listen to actual pre-recorded history taking sessions
from our consulting appointments, (posted online to be
listened to outside of class for discussion in class) submit
their own case histories for review (a limited number will
be selected) and conduct a "practice" history during the
class.
Here's what previous students had to say about this course:
"The interview lessons are actually transferring
to my "real" life. Helps me to ask more
specific questions."
Thanks, Karen
"I'm excited about this course. I
absolutely loved taking a ‘behavioral history' and got
some fabulous tips that have helped me get out of the
interviewing rut I was in. Thanks for doing these
telecourses."

This course has been approved for 3.75 CEU hours from
CCPDT and CACVT. It is now available two ways: LIVE and
ON DEMAND.
The LIVE class is presented as a tele-webinar, with live
audio, visual graphics and photographs. You'll be able
to ask questions of the instructors in real time. The course
consists of three sessions, each lasting approximately
1 ¼ hour. The course comes with class notes and recommended
readings.
Can't make the live course or afraid you'll have to miss
some classes? No worries - online replays are available
immediately after each session and for one week following
the end of the course. CEUs can be earned through listening
to the replays by correctly emailing us answers to "test"
questions given during the class.
The LIVE class isn't on our current schedule. Please
sign up for our ezine
"Pet Behavior One Piece at a Time" to be notified about
when it will be offered next. Can't wait for the next
live class?
Take this class ON DEMAND now! The ON DEMAND class is
a recorded tele-webcast with the full content of the live
class including class discussion and class notes. You have
one month's online access to all 3 class sessions which
include the taking of 2 behavior histories during class,
audio recordings of 3 recorded histories from Drs. Hetts'
and Estep's clients, and class notes (including sample
history forms). You also have an opportunity to ask questions
of the instructors via email. Their answers to your questions
will be recorded and emailed to you within a week.
You can earn CEUs by submitting emailed answers to questions
asked by the instructors during the recorded class. We'll
provide the details once you register.
